YourOnlineCommunity believe the major challenge for its new video website is to present Wollongong its home town to the world using the internet in a more informative and family friendly way than YouTube has been able to.
YOC appreciate this is a tall order but consider three things:
1) yocTV has started Day 1 with about 10% of the number of Wollongong linked videos as YouTube has accumulated over the past 12 months
2) Criminal acts such as train graffiti are top rated YouTube videos which reflect badly on the area
3) The two most viewed Wollongong linked videos by far on YouTube are promoted as - violent , lesbian, sex
Perhaps the most popular aspect of this new video on demand phenomena is that most of the material posted is what is known as consumer generated content (we used to call them home videos) rather than professionally made videos or adverts originally made for television.
Admittedly this novel approach has created a massive resource of video content from all over the world on just about any topic you can think of, however, it also includes a large amount of material of extremely dubious quality or value.
To date, mainstream US sites such as YouTube have hosted any material they receive even if it involved racist remarks, gratuitous nudity or violence - they claim to quickly remove clips if they receive complaints but usually counter any media criticism as being an attack on the citizens of America's constitutional right of freedom of expression.
Since YourOnlineCommunity officially launched its own 'localised' video portal www.yoctv.com last week I have been regularly visiting the website to check on last minute changes and final modifications, and I can now say that everything is working as designed (thanks to John Wooding and the team at N4B) and we are already starting to get videos uploaded by locals.
It must be emphasised that yocTV is a moderated site which means, unlike the hugely popular YouTube, we check all video material before we upload it to our servers. But what this also means is there can be a delay of up to a couple of days before your clip is encoded and finally hosted for general viewing.
YOC are also conscious that a large number of visitors to the new site will likely click through from our SportsLive websites and, as a consequence, include many young people, so a special effort is being made to control the much publicised problem of offensive or inappropriate web content.
No doubt, like the popular but 'politically incorrect and irreverent' YoY joke section in our weekly e-magazine, we will still have some detractors but, as they say, you can't please all of the people all of the time. At the risk of sounding like I'm getting on my soapbox I would point out that YOC is the only media in Australia that will not carry advertising for products and services such as liquor, escort services or sex aids so we are in fact trying to impose some restraints on an area which is not presently regulated at all.
Having said that we do have a special section for locals Pat Williamson and Daniel Stawanski's award winning InWollongongTonight show which has over 20 clips of what I would classify as 'under grad humour' - all of which we have clearly marked ADULT THEMES - but to my mind the clips are fairly tame compared to other more mainstream video portals or what is freely available on the internet.

Of course we do now have YoY on video and I suspect this new format will be even more popular!
