Seeing Stars

What is the first Saturn return?

Seeing Stars for the week beginning February 26, 2008

PISCES

Our fish are a little out of sorts this week as they struggle to control issues that arise in their personal sphere of relationships. You may feel that you lack control of your own life as you grapple with the need to express yourself and also the needs of a relationship. All parties need to compromise not just you.

ARIES

If you have been at loggerheads with friends/siblings or an associate, it is time to bury the hatchet. With your ruling planet Mars on good terms with the fated North Node, by collaboration and cooperation a workable solution can be reached that benefits everyone.

TAURUS

Amazing thoughts and ideas are floating through your head, one could even say you are feeling rather inspired. Don’t let them stay just a notion, use the common sense you are known for and put them to good use.

GEMINI

Try to avoid indulging yourself at another’s expense; your teasing could well be taken out of context. Your quick wittedness and off-the-cuff comments may cause offence particularly from a lover. Speaking of which there may be some upsetting news.

CANCER

This is a week where you may like to play catch up. Those that you have neglected or been neglected by play a bigger role. Don’t sit at home alone pondering your options, be sensitive to your own needs and start interacting.

LEO

Have you started to notice some subtle changes in yourself? No longer concerned with outward appearances, the party animal is beginning a journey of self-enquiry and is looking inwards for some answers.

VIRGO

Tension at work keeps you on your toes, so make sure you take time out to de stress otherwise your nervousness sees you becoming increasing over-strung. Sometimes it is good to have your routine interrupted.

LIBRA

With love and romance never far from your mind don’t be surprised if you develop a sudden interest in someone who you would not normally be keen on. Give them a chance, it may not be long lasting, but you’ll appreciate the change.

SCORPIO

You have an enormous reservoir of energy which needs to be channelled constructively otherwise it can cause difficulties. With increased endurance and persistence use the next few weeks to complete that project you have put on hold.

SAGITTARIUS

A change of behaviour opens you up to new ideas and experiences which may cause you to seek new prospects or opportunities. This will require a certain amount of flexibility on the home front.

CAPRICORN

What started in October last year could well come to a head over the next few weeks. If you have locked yourself into a particular frame of reference then you may discover that this is too narrow. Make changes but don’t expect a resolution till late June, July.

AQUARIUS

It’s time for a change and you can feel it. The very air around you seems to crackle with electricity and if you are honest with yourself you rather enjoy shocking people with your comments, behaviour and innovative dress sense.

WHAT IS THE FIRST SATURN RETURN?

Our journey through life tends to have shared, basic sequential physical and psychological developments. Psychologist Erik Erikson’s Theory of Identity Development proposes that we must move through and successfully resolve eight “crisis or dilemmas” over the course of our lives.

Jane Loevinger’s theory of Ego Development proposes that the stages are sequential and cumulative, not inevitable.

Then we have Daniel Levinson’s Theory of Seasons of Adulthood where he proposes that life is made up of alternating periods of stable life structures and transition periods where our life structure can be re-examined, adjusted, or altered.

So what does this have to do with Astrology and the first Saturn Return?

All theories agree that whatever other processes occur (education, family conditions, ethnicity, intelligence) our life journey is occurring along a path that has common features of development that are roughly age linked.

The Saturn Return occurs around the 28 –30th year of life and represents a time of choice, a turning point, which can determine the direction our life takes. The principles of Saturn include the “Puritan” virtues of hard work, practicality, productivity, responsibility etc. But he is also associated with authority figures, disciplinary parent, restrictions and our obligations, to name a few. Up until the 17th century he was considered the outer most planet hence his association with boundaries. Are you starting to build up a picture here?

The first Saturn Return is not only indicative of Saturn’s principles having touched on every house, luminary, planet and point (the individual cycle), in the Natal chart by transit, but also the Generic Cycle. It is this cycle, where by transit, Saturn makes contact with natal Saturn by squares or opposition and finally back to it’s natal position, the Saturn Return which produces it’s critical turning points for all of us, at the same age.

The ancients also had Saturn as the Dweller at the Threshold, who kept the keys to the gate. If anyone has read Joseph Campbell’s A Hero With a Thousand Faces, it is only by challenging the ‘threshold guardian’ or established bounds or limits that our hero enters into a new zone of experience. As he passes into the unknown his path to self-understanding and self-discovery is full of obstacles, hurdles and choices that are painful.

Next week: The Challenges Up To And Including The First Saturn Return. Our own hero’s journey.
