Stevens wins silver behind Hackett in 1500m; Parkes does well in IM
SLC Aquadot’s Craig Stevens did a 6 sec PB to come second to Grant Hackett in the 1500m freestyle at the Australian Swimming Championships last Saturday. He therefore qualified for the 1500m event in the Olympics as well as the 400m freestyle reported in last week’s column.

Nineteen year old Stephen Parkes, also from Aquadot, qualified 7th fastest for the 200m Individual Medley final. But then in a great swim from lane 1 in the final he came fourth just missing out on the bronze medal by 0.12secs.

Eighteen year old Erin Malone made the semi finals of the 50m breaststroke and just missed out on the final by 0.1 sec. She had also qualified for the semis of the 200m breaststroke and swam a time of 2.36.56 in her semi to be ranked 13th overall and miss out on the final by 1.42 secs.
Sharks win three from five in Premier Youth League
Last weekend the Sharks youngest three teams the 13s, 14s and 15s all had wins over Sydney United in last weekend’s Premier Youth League round.
The 15s had their first win and inflicted the first loss on their opponents.
The 13s continue to be the only undefeated team in their grade and are clearly in top spot. The 14s are also undefeated but are in third spot as leader Blacktown has played one extra game and second placed Marconi lead the Sharks on goal difference by 1.
Results of all round 5 games between Sutherland Sharks and Sydney United were:
Under 13: Sutherland 4 - 1
Under 14: Sutherland won 1 nil
Under 15: Sutherland won 1 nil
Under 16: Sutherland lost 3 - 1
Under 18: Sutherland lost 7 nil
Early warning – get into training for Sutherland to Surf
The Wanda SLSC Sutherland to Surf (sponsored by Brooks Fitness First) is the major community participatory event in the Shire and is recognised as the lead up race for the City to Surf. This year it is to be held on Sunday 28 July.
This great community event is held in July each year. The Sutherland to Surf event brings more than 5000 competitors to race, wheel or walk 11kms from Sutherland Entertainment Centre to Wanda Beach.
As part of the Sutherland to Surf, there is the Tradies Pro-Sprint category. This category comprises the first 100 fastest seeded competitors and attracts top class runners from the Australian Institute of Sport. The Tradies Pro-Sprint offers prize money to the first top four male and female competitors. The winners have gone on to be major place getters in the high profile Sun-Herald City to Surf.

Finals Wrap – Australian Women’s Baseball Championships
The defending titleholders, Victoria, took out the 2008 Australian Women’s Baseball Championships with a tightly contested 3-2 win over New South Wales in the final played at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley near Wollongong last Saturday, March 29. The come from behind win was the eighth by Victoria in the tenth year of the Championships.
Queensland managed to maintain the excellent performances they produced in the second half of the tournament by defeating Country New South Wales and capturing third position in the Championships.
