Profile
by Andrew Connery

Colin Seaborn – man of principle

The principal of SOS Initiatives discusses his many private and business interests

How long have you been involved with the area?  I have been the Moderator of the SportsLive website since it started a number of years ago and have been a regular columnist for ParramattaOnline since October last year.

Hobbies / Passions?  I play social tennis every Saturday and like to follow a wide range of sports.  I am also interested in live theatre.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done was train as a recruit for national service

Your life/business philosophy:  Maintain ethics in everything

At school I was in a team that won a State Rugby League knockout

I wish everyone in society would treat everyone else with respect

I’m good at analysing issues and assisting people and organisations to come up with ways forward

I’m bad at golf … most of the time!

I often wonder what would have happened if I had not given up piano lessons (as a child) for more time to play sport

Describe your business … what makes it different/better As an independent management consultant working with other professional colleagues we can offer in-depth experience and expertise to our clients

Short term goals? What about 5 years

In addition to SOS Initiatives my consulting practice I am involved with two young and exciting ventures.  So I would like to see the exploration company establish a viable mine and YourOnlineCommunity recognised as a successful media group

How long in current business?   I’ve operated SOS Initiatives for about 12 years

Your latest project is helping to review waste management and resource recovery strategies, particularly in the ACT.

What you love about your work?  The challenge of identifying problems … and then actually solving them

What you would improve about the area/or your work? Having more time to balance everything and still being able to sleep

Who has been a mentor? Any other business influences?  A number of senior executives with CRA ( Rio Tinto) and Comalco when I worked there

Has your family/partner been a help?  Yes – having to put up with me if I am tired etc etc

What business books do you read?  I use to read extensively when I was in an internal consulting role with CRA but now only have time for shorter papers

What formal qualifications do you have?  I have post graduate qualifications in Business Analysis and Metallurgy
