Gone Fishin’

It’s a whole new dimension talking to Peter Baily

Peter, who sometimes lobs in Sydney for a long lunch and a glass or three between spruiking for business, runs fishing safaris - on the Nile!

Quite apart from the location his tours are a bit more than your average fly fishing in the Snowy or tracking trout on Scottish lochs. For a start, the Nile perch you are chasing are as big as a small family car but, luckily, are not known for any fondness for fisherman's flesh. (We think!)

He dropped us a line (pardon that) this week about some discounted Nile perch safaris on Egypt's Lake Nasser.

“Don't worry about the world financial crisis; come on over; go fishing; relax,'' he wrote.

That's Pete!

Fairly, hunting the giant perch is one helluva way to escape the woes of the world and to make it even more attractive in these fiscally fragile times, he has knocked 30 per cent off his prices for a few selected departures this year.

Ok, I realise most people can't just drop their tattered investment portfolios or superannuation reports and woosh off to Egypt.

But there are those who can.

Pete has some available space on two Abu Simbel fishing safaris this December. One is down from 945 pounds sterling to 660; another was 1420 Euro and is now 995. (I quote in those currencies because the way our
Oz buck is slipping and sliding it makes more sense if you do your own conversions at the time you read this.)

The prices are per person for two “anglers” sharing a fishing boat and includes the arrival and departure package from Luxor or Cairo.

You can book with African Angler direct at peter@african-angler.net and for more detailed information visit http://www.african-angler.co.uk/abu_simbel.html

Do the web visit anyway if you're interested.

Pete is also on about “space filler” safaris in 2009 which fill gaps on his logistics boat chart by 30 per cent.

“These combine nicely with a holiday in Egypt, visiting the country's ancient monuments,'' he says.

They do have the experience to arrange your holiday on land as well as afloat.
On offer are three, four, five and six-day full-board fishing safaris during next April and May.

Another departure for the company is a series of safaris which give visitors the chance to join in and help with the company's reconnaissance and training with 30 per cent off the regular ask.

“Fishing conditions are changing all the time and the Nile perch, especially the big ones (126-pounders are fair size), are getting a lot smarter,'' Pete says. “Also, we have a massive lake to cover and need to explore new areas.''

The training safaris help them stay ahead of the game with fishing techniques, exploration and staff training and exploration. They are keen to invite anglers to take part on these safaris because a lot of what Pete's guides learn is as a result of input from experienced anglers who join their safaris.

“Even if you are not what you might consider to be an experienced angler, your contribution will be useful,'' Pete said. “We explore new fishing grounds, avoiding well-known hot spots, which is fun and does not require a lot of angling skill.''

The training safaris have departures in March and October 2009.
