Sutherland Shire’s Smith takes waste management reins in NSW
Ron Smith has been elected unopposed to head the NSW branch of the Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA), replacing outgoing president Mike Ritchie who served his maximum two terms. Currently waste manager for Sydney’s Sutherland Shire Council, Smith said he wants to encourage greater networking between key stakeholders in the industry, especially local councils and private sector service providers. “We’ve got to get the message out there to all local government… we’ve got to be seen as the ‘go to place’ if someone wants to know something [about waste],” he said at WMAA’s NSW branch meeting last week.
In handing over the reins, Ritchie highlighted the importance of having someone with a background in local government stepping up to the top job. He pointed out councils make up 40% of the association’s members and are a “significant contributor” to any debate about industry issues.
Outside the WMAA circles, Tony Khoury of the NSW Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association has also congratulated Smith on the appointment.
“It’s both great to have local government in that role, and a great choice because [Smith] has knowledge across a lot of issues,” said Khoury.
